Dealing with blackheads effectively

White and blackheads can appear anywhere on the face, chest or back and can make your skin look unappealing.

The root cause for these is skin congestion. Avni Amlani, international skincare consultant explains, "Skin congestion is clogged follicles commonly referred to as a blackhead (open comedone) or a whitehead (closed comedone). The follicle is filled with a mixture of oil (sebum), dead skin cells, tiny hairs and some debris, which combine to make a plug." Usually, these congestions are non-inflamed lesions, but if neglected, they can develop into a pustular lesion — spots or a pimple, say experts.

Dr Sushil Tahiliani senior dermatologist, says, "When we use cosmetic products that are comedogenic or acnegenic, on our face or body, blackheads develop, thanks to clogging up of the pores."

Skincare professionals suggest that the best way to treat this is to control excess oil production and to keep the skin clean and free from debris. Avni states, "An important step is to focus on a double cleanse routine, both morning and evening." She recommends using an exfoliant thrice a week to minimise congestion. "Cleansing oils are terrific because they liquefy sebum, oil-based makeup (especially long-lasting), waterproof sunscreens and other debris on the skin. It is important to choose a light, plant-based cleansing oil which emulsifies with water, for ease of removal, without stripping the skin of its natural barrier lipids. This allows the second cleanse with clay or foaming gel to penetrating further to deep cleanse your skin. A clay cleanser can be doubled up as a 'mini-masque' to further raw out the impurities and blockages in the skin," says Avni.

Aesthetician Ritu Tanwar says that an important part of any cleansing routine is to be thorough about it. She recommends, "Make sure that you do not leave any residue of the cleansing products that you are using." Avni agrees, "Cleanser residue can contribute to congestion."
